On May 22, 2017, the Official Visit to Japan of Mr. Jorge Barakat, Administrator of the Panama Maritime Authority, began in the context of the 100th Anniversary of the Panama Ship Registry, in collaboration with the Embassy of Panama in Japan and the Consulate General of Panama in Tokyo. The delegation led by Mr. Barakat, included Mr. Fernando Solorzano, Director General of Merchant Marine, H.E. Arsenio Domínguez, Ambassador of Panama to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mrs. Rina Berrocal, Chief of Segumar Panama and Mrs. Miriam Rodríguez, Director of Public Relations.

During the official visit, the delegation carried out the meetings with the main ship companies, such as Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) y Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K-Line), as well as Japan Shipowners’ Association (JSA). After a series of meetings, a maritime seminar was held at Palace Hotel where the Administrator Barakat delivered a commemorative speech of the history of the Panama Ship Registry, expressing the importance of Japan as main user of the registry.

On the other hand, Ambassador Dominguez gave a presentation about the Ballast Water Management Convention, which comes into force in next September, while Mrs. Berrocal delivered a presentation about the electronic technical certificate emission (E-certificate). This innovative system aims to reduce the cost and time by issuing documents to the clients in electronic format, in order to face the strong competition in the maritime market.

The first day of the visit concluded with a reception, where the Administrator Barakat granted a plate of recognition to the representatives of NYK, MOL and K-Line for their great contribution to the growth of Panama Flag as No, 1 in the world.

Besides, the Administrator Barakat gave a recognition to Dowa Line for the loyalty to use only Panama flag in all their ships. During the opening remarks, Administrator Barakat conveyed his gratitude to the Panama flag users for trusting our Ship Registry.

It is important to mention that both the seminar and the reception counted for more tan 100 participants.
