Courtesy Visit of the young champions of “Shinkido”
On August 26th, 2008, H.E. Dr. Alfredo Martiz, Ambassador of Panama to Japan received a courtesy visit of young champions of “Shinkido” (Japanese Martial Art), who have won prizes in the competition of Kanagawa and Saitama regions.
During the visit, Ambassador Martiz asked the young champions about their aspirations toward the future. The young champions expressed various opinions optimistically and talked about their dreams with enthusiasm.
Ambassador Martiz was glad to observe the high spirit of the young champions and expressed his gratitude for the visit, reiterating the continuous support of the Embassy of Panama in Japan.
Currently, Ambassador Martiz is the Honorary President of the Championship of Shinkido, participating as a supporter of these events.

Ambassador of Panama met Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan
On June 5th, 2008, H.E. Alfredo Martiz, Ambassador of Panama to Japan, attended a dinner held by H.E. Masahiko Komura, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, in honor to the Group of Head of Missions of Latin-American and Caribbean Countries in Japan (GRULAC, in Spanish). The dinner took place at the Iikura House.
The occasion offered a great opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the countries of GRULAC and Japan, including the economic ties, political dialogue, and cultural activities.

Courtesy Visit of Chief Producer of NHK
On July 9th, 2008, H.E. Dr. Alfredo Martiz, Ambassador of Panama to Japan received a courtesy visit of Mr. Taihei WAKAMATSU, Chief Producer of Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK).
Mr. WAKAMATSU explained about the project for the Improvement of TV and Radio Programs of National Broadcasting System of the Republic of Panama. The project includes a donation of 680 educational programs from NHK related to various aspects of Japan such as culture, history, architecture, and others, and will be carried out before the end of the fiscal year of 2008. Mr. WAKAMATSU asked for the cooperation and support from the Embassy to speed up the necessary paper work so that the programs can be released to the Public in Panama soon.
Ambassador Martiz expressed his gratitude to NHK for its contribution, reiterating the support of our Mission.

Embassy of Panama and TCAC organizes a tour to the Tokyo District
On June 30th, 2008, the Embassy of Panama and the Tokyo Consular and Administrative Corps (TCAC) organized a tour to the facilities of the Tokyo District Court addressed to Diplomatic and Consular members accredited in Japan, including a question and answer session about the new jury system.
The activity included the observation of a real court case and a presentation by Judge Tetsumi Maruyama, who delivered a talk on the new “Saiban-in” jury system (lay judge system), which will enter into practice by May 2009.
Unlike the current jury system, where trials are led by professional judges with the participation of prosecutors and lawyers, the new system will also include general public as members of jury to take part in deliberations and decisions for serious criminal court cases, such as murder, kidnapping, robbery resulting in bodily injury or death and others.
The Tokyo Consular and Administrative Corps (TCAC) is comprised of diplomatic consular and administrative affairs staff of Embassies accredited in Japan, and provides and excellent forum for opinions exchange among its members, as well as networking between the Diplomatic Missions and Japanese authorities.
The Panamanian Diplomatic Mission has been part of the TCAC Board of Directors since 2002, appointed to the Treasury (2003-2006), Presidency (2006-2007) and Vice Presidency (2007-2008). Recently, the Embassy of Panama was elected again for the TCAC Board Presidency for the 2008-2009 period.

Courtesy Visit of Former Honorary Chairman of Club Tourism International Inc.
On June 24th, 2008, H.E. Dr. Alfredo Martiz, Ambassador of Panama to Japan, received a courtesy visit paid by Mr. Hideo Takahashi, Former Honorary Chairman of Club Tourism International Inc., which is a major Japanese organization involved in the development of tourism sector.
Mr. Takahashi has worked for 45 years in the tourism sector with a highly respected expertise. He founded the non-profit organization World Heritage Academy, where important personalities of the Japanese society work together in order to promote tourism activities from and towards Japan. Previously, he has served as President of the World Heritage Academy.
Mr. Takahashi informed that he will submit a plan regarding the establishment of a Central American & the Caribbean Governmental Tourism Promotion Office, as part of his comprehensive strategy for regional tourism development. This strategy will serve to increase the awareness towards Panama as a tourism destination within the Japanese society.
Ambassador Martiz welcomed the initiative and proposed to arrange a meeting between Mr. Takahashi and the Heads of Missions of Central American & Caribbean countries to discuss the plan.
Mr. Takahashi has initiated similar strategies and was instrumental for the establishment of the Tourism Office for Cuba, Poland, and the Mediterranean region comprised by Turkey, Israel, Egypt, and Greece.
During the meeting, Ambassador Martiz also informed about the current efforts to establish an Open Sky Agreement between Panama and Japan. If realized, there will be direct flights between both countries, contributing to the growth of Japanese tourism to Panama.

Ambassador of Panama attends a Sumo reception with sports personalities
On June 23rd, 2008, H.E. Dr. Alfredo Martiz, Ambassador of Panama to Japan, and his Wife, Carla Marotta de Martiz, attended a reception on the occasion of the victory of the sumo wrestler Chiyohaku from Kokonoe-beya school at the Tournament of Jyuryo Professional Division.
Kokonoe-oyakata, also known as Yokozuna Chiyonofuji, Director of the prestigious Kokonoe-beya sumo school, expressed his gratitude for Ambassador Martiz and his Wife’s attendance. Chiyonofuji is one of the greatest champions in the 1,500-year history of sumo. The occasion provided a good opportunity to explore possibilities for a visit to Panama of sumo wrestlers in the future.
During the reception, it was suggested that the Republic of Panama provides a trophy or gift from the country for the coming Sumo Professional Major League Championship.
Important personalities related to other sports also attended the reception, where Ambassador Martiz suggested the possibility of carrying out a Panama Cup horse racing in Japan.
The occasion also provided an excellent opportunity to foster the cultural exchange between Panama and Japan through sports, reaffirming the presence of Panama within the Japanese sports world.

Panamanians officials trained by JICA
On June 20th, 2008, H.E. Dr. Alfredo Martiz, Ambassador of Panama to Japan, attended a farewell reception offered by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), on the occasion of the completion of the International Cooperation Seminar for the Central and South American Countries, which was also attended by Panamanian officials. The reception took place at Shibuya ward, Tokio.
Mr. Jorge GARCÍA, Telecommunications engineer of the National Police Agency of Panama, participated in a technical training course from May 7th to June 21st, 2008.
Mr. José Antonio FRAIZ, Coordinator of the Panamanian Autonomous Cooperative Institute (IPACOOP, in Spanish), participated in a seminar on Official Development Assistance (ODA), from June 8th to 21st, 2008.
Mr. Amilcar VILLARREAL, Chief of the Distribution and Water Loss Control Department of the Institute of Aqueducts and National Sewage systems (IDAAN, in Spanish), is attending a training program on engineering on water supply system, from May 20th to August 6th, 2008.
Mr. GARCÍA and Mr. FRAIZ completed successfully their respective programs, gaining further knowledge on the Japanese methods and systems, which will lead to strengthen the cooperation ties between Panama and Japan.
From 2007 and 2008, JICA has trained 54 Panamanian public and private-sector professionals, preparing well-trained human resources for the future.

Opening of Mola Exhibition with Panamanian Specialty Coffee
As a follow-up of our Mission’s commercial promotion program, on June 17th, 2008, Mr. Ritter N. Díaz, Commercial Attaché of the Embassy, attended a ceremony organized by the prestigious company Saza Coffee Co. Ltd., located in Hitachinaka, Ibaraki prefecture, on the occasion of the exhibition of Panamanian molas and the sales of Panamanian Specialty Coffee.
Mola exhibition and coffee sales were held at Saza Coffee Gallery at the same time to show the connection of the cultural background of Panama with the high quality of our coffee, which is produced under excellent social and environmental standards. For the exhibition, Mr. Yoshio Suzuki, Chairman of the said company, displayed over 250 Panamanian molas of his personal collection.
During the ceremony, Mr. Ritter N. Díaz, praised the efforts carried out by the company to promote Panamanian products. On this occasion, Saza Coffee invited Mr. Motoki Honma, Mayor of Hitachinaka city, and Mr. Hajime Umino, Chairman of Hitachinaka Chamber of Commerce. The Embassy of Panama presented Panamanian souvenirs to Saza Coffee, as well as other important authorities of Hitachinaka city and the Chamber of Commerce as a token of appreciation for the promotion of the Panamanian coffee.
After the ceremony, the executives of Saza Coffee coordinated a courtesy visit paid by Mr. Díaz to Hitachinaka Port, which is managed by Ibaraki Port Authority Corporation. During the visit, Mr. Diaz could learn about the important role played by the port on behalf of the industrial development of Ibaraki, since the port serves the global logistics needs of 14 industrial corporations located nearby.

Japanese students journey to Panama without passport
Recently, the Embassy of Panama in Japan received its school visit No.45.
With the purpose of boosting cultural exchange and to foster a deeper understanding of Panamanian culture among Japanese students towards the future, this Diplomatic Mission has been carrying out a successful school visit program.
Based on this program, elementary and middle school students visit our Embassy on a regular basis to undertake their first journey to Panama without passport. The program is designed to stimulate students’ interest in traveling to Panama in the future.
Before the visit, students send a questionnaire in advance regarding topics of their interests. The Embassy delivers a presentation about the country’s history, geography, culture, sports, nature, Panama Canal, historical sites, cuisine, lifestyle, and others.
Presentations are carried out in Spanish with Japanese translation, using audiovisual material, books, and handicrafts. At the end of the session, students enjoy Panamanian traditional sweets, while receiving the recipe and an explanation on how to cook them.
Needless to say, school visits of the Embassy of Panama to Japan under the direction of H.E. Dr. Alfredo Martiz, and with the support of his team, contributes to strengthen friendship and cooperation ties between both countries, enhancing the country’s image in Japan.

Courtesy call by Teacher of “Mola” in Japan
On June 11, 2008, H.E. Dr. Alfredo Martiz, Ambassador of Panama to Japan, received a courtesy call by Mrs. Fumiko Nakayama, well-known teacher of Panamanian art craft “Mola” in Kyoto, Japan.
Mrs. NAKAYAMA has been making and teaching “Mola” in Kyoto for more than 35 years, and has become a respected authority in the matter. Mrs. Nakayama has contributed particularly to the dissemination of the Native Panamanian Kuna’s art in Japan in collaboration with Japanese Public Television NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation).
During her visit, Mrs. Nakayama showed Ambassador Martiz two Molas, which represent passages of the classical novel of Japanese literature "Genji Monogatari" (Stories of Genji) in celebration of the 1000th year of the publication of this masterpiece. Mrs. Nakayama aims at making 30 Molas with passages of the famous novel, with the purpose of carrying out an exhibition with support of NHK and this Diplomatic Mission.
Likewise, Mrs. Nakayama took the opportunity to donate a Mola book she recently published. The book includes many images of horses, reflecting the natural character of Mola.
Ambassador Martiz thanked Mrs. Nakayama for the book and reiterated the importance of cultural exchange, through the fusion of the literary history of Japan with the Kuna’s art of Panama.

Panama participates in Japanese Language Program 2007-2008 for Government Officials of Foreign Services, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan
On May 26, 2008, the Embassy of Panama in Japan, attended the Closing Ceremony of the Japanese Language Program for officials of Foreign Affairs and Government of different countries. The ceremony was organized by H.E. Mr. Masakatsu Koike, Vice-minister of Foreign Affairs. The ceremony took place in the Assembly Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
The program in reference was carried out from October, 2007 to May, 2008 in order to train the participants on Japanese language and culture, which will contribute to increase the effectiveness of communication between the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and those of the participants’ countries.
The Republic of Panama was represented by Ms. Flor Maria Ochy Arroyo, Third Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Panama. As a part of the program in mention, Ms. Ochy Arroyo visited the Panama Embassy in Japan in order to become familiar with the work of the Mission.
Ms. Ochy Arroyo successfully concluded the program in reference, acquiring a greater understanding on the foreign policy of Japan, which, without a doubt, will help to strengthen the relations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Panama and Japan.

Working Visit to Japan of the Second Vice President of Panama
On May 22nd, 2008, H.E. Rubén Arosemena Valdés, Second Vice President of Panama, arrived in Tokyo with the purpose of meeting high ranking Japanese authorities and representatives of the private sector. The delegation was also comprised by Mr. Jorge Hernán Rubio Carrera, lawmaker of the National Assembly of Panama and President of the Panama Japan Inter-Parliamentary League.
The Panamanian delegation held meetings with Mr. Mikio Sasaki, Chairman of the Board of Mitsubishi Corporation, member of the Advisory Board for the Panama Canal, and Chairman of the Panama Japan Business Cooperation Committee. Vice President Arosemena exchanged ideas with Mr. Sasaki towards the strengthening of the commercial ties between the Republic of Panama and the Japanese private sector. Furthermore, both parties agreed to cooperate in any infrastructure development project in Panama.
Likewise, the Vice President exchanged points of view with H.E. Nobutaka Machimura, Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan, regarding bilateral issues. Afterwards, he paid a courtesy visit to H.E. Tetsuzo Fuyushiba, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Japan, who inquired about the progress of the Panama Canal Expansion Program.
Finally, the Panamanian delegation led by the Vice President of Panama closed the day with a dinner offered by Mr. Yasuyuki Fujishima, Director & Senior Managing Executive Officer of Sojitz Corporation, who also performs as Secretary General of the Panama Japan Business Cooperation Committee.

3rd annual Japan Ship Finance Forum
From May 14th to 15th, 2008, H.E. Dr. Alfredo Martiz, Ambassador of Panama to Japan, attended the 3rd Annual Japan Ship Finance Forum, which was organized by Marine Money Asia Pte. Ltd. jointly with Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC). The event in reference took place at Imabari Kokusai Hotel, Imabari city, Ehime prefecture, where important shipping companies, including shipbuilding firms are located.
With the participation of Japanese and overseas specialists in the area, the event focused on the current situation of the ship industry, providing valuable and first-hand information regarding the shipbuilding and ship finance sector in Japan the world.
Ambassador Martiz also took the opportunity to pay a courtesy visit to Mr. Shinobu Ochi, Mayor of Imabari city, which has sister city ties with Panama City.
The participation of the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP, in Spanish) in such event reaffirmed the leadership of Panama within the international shipping industry.
